right now. there are reports of a school shooting in new town, connecticut. at the sandy hook elementary school. officials are saying there is not much information but we are getting this from our local fox affiliate, fox 61 there. they say police are reporting a number of injured parties. we are not sure if they are adults or children. they say the nature of the injuries is not clear. we are getting the information into our newsroom. students are apparently being escorted from the building in groups. there is a staging area that has been set up for parents who naturally will be terrified to receive this news, and the police are on the scene. so we will bring you any more information as soon as we have it on this unfolding story. bill: back to that in a moment. in the mean time a powerful earthquake a few hours ago hitting the southern california coast and off the western coast of mexico here. 6.3 magnitude, about 2:30am local time, about 5:30 here on the east coast. about 160 miles off the coast of san diego here and local news reports say that folks in long beach and newport beach in s

school because dad is going. that was pretty tricky. it is a wonderful program. dr. sanford kay, sandy kay, talked creative writing and he is thanked in there book. no sandy kay, no book. strange wandering paths that met from my father reciting churchill to sandy kay and i'm a feature writer who meets manchester and like winston churchill i'm not a big believer in favorite but these were like a bunch of slips that did tphno pass on the,scene in the night and i couldn't manuimagine all these paths meeting and joining and here we are. host: back to the writing aspect of it itself, how did you write? what kind of -- long hand or give us the atmosphere where you wrote and what time of day and what did you write with? guest: well, i would use stick 'ems in the books i was referring it and in june of 1941 and i tried to color code them and that didn't work. my office looks like somebody who needs mental health help. it looked messy but it was madness, there was method in the madness. and i wrote directly to the comput computer, the word processor. i would write -- i don't want to say drafts.

rang out in honor of those killed a week ago when a gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. 20 children and six adults died at the school. the gunman also killed his mother and himself. governors in at least 29 states called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims. now the white house says president obama took part privately. also in newtown today, three more victims of the massacre are being laid to rest. yesterday funerals were held for three 6-year-olds and two teachers. it is a heartbreaking scene that has played out over and over again this week. the mother of the gunman adam lanza has also been laid to rest. a friend says nancy lanza was buried yesterday at an undisclosed location. >>> the gun control debate intensifying one week after that horror in newtown, connecticut, the killing of innocent children. just moments ago we heard from the national rifle association, executive director wayne lapierre called for putting armed police in every school. he also blamed the media, violent video games and a lack of prosecutions of violent crimina criminals. more gun laws

to life after the massacre at sandy hook in newtown, connecticut, ten days ago. on friday, the head of the national rifle association, wayne la pi oerriere called for armed guards in every school. that stance was met with awave of headlines and editorials that lampooned la pierre condemned the nra refusal to give any ground on gun control. but sunday on nbc's "meet the press" he was unrepentant. >> if it's crazy to call for putting police and armed security in our school to protect our children, then call me crazy. i tell what you the american people, i think the american people think it's crazy not to do it. it's the one thing that would keep people safe and the nra is going to try to do that. >> brown: on the same program, new york democrat senator chuck schumer called la pierre tone deaf. >> he blamed everything but guns, movies, the media, president obama, gun-free cool zones, you name it, the video games, he blames them. now, trying to prevent shootings in schools without talking about guns is like trying to prevent lung canger is without talking about cigarettes. >> brown:

headlines. sandy's impact. buyers are back. and a big bake sale. joining me now forbes staff writer morgan brennan. let's get to hurricane sandy which took a toll of on consumer spending. "consumer reports" says spending fell in october after rising in september. the gdp was higher than estimated. i never can quite figure out how they can both be true and whether or not this continues in coming months. >> that's a great question. i think we need to start with the revised number for the third quarter. the reason we saw gdp growth in the third quarter was because businesses were restocking their inventory. an government spending increased about 9.5%. not sustainable indicators of economic growth in the long term. consumer spending makes up about 70% of economic growth. the fact we saw that come down in october and actually the fact in november the early numbers despite a robust holiday shopping weekend are still not looking so good is why we're seeing economists predict a weak fourth quarter economic number. and we're actually seeing numbers as low as 1% which would be really terrible. >> no

college. my job was to get to 270 electoral votes in key battleground states. we didn't do much with sandy given what was. i'm not an expert on it at all. just to be honest. i do think that there are a lot of things we learned and what we did on the campaign. text messaging being one example. how can we of the state of the figure multiple pathways in multiple pieces of technology be able to get information out to voters much more quickly with much more of the kind of new technology that would individualize information for folks based on where they live. and send them to websites that are easy to maneuver and easy to get around, or ways for them to do it on their mobile devices. we should be ready for that in the future and have the systems in place, and have that ready in all states moving forward. i think there's some really good things out of sandy, how it affected voting. >> any thoughts, scott? >> unfortunate we didn't spend as much time in those states addressing those similar reasons because the electoral college. i guess i would just say i know we're cautiously optimistic. talking e

for sandy on the east pork inhere's a lot of that. call your delegates. my question to you, in regard to what i've heard on president obama in regard to social security is trying to incorporate changes cpi -- chained cpi. a person would pay $1,200 more in one year and over. 30 years, $28,000. could you go in depth on that for me? guest: there are different ways of computing the consumer price index. one of those is to change how much we saved for food and shelter and so forth for the proportions of the previous year as opposed to a base year. that gives you a somewhat lower rate of inflation. economists would argue that is more realistic and a fairer way to index and the government benefits. i have a problem with that. as an economist, i'm interested in perfection of measurement. as a guide u.s. to operate in washington, i am also concerned with equity. older folks really have a different basket of goods than and people. when was the last time grandma and grandpa went out and bought a suite of bedroom furniture. young folks do that. where is older folks spend much more in health care.
